Metaverse: A Place “Parallel” to Physical World

In October 2021, Facebook decided to rebrand as Meta. They also introduced “metaverse.” The concept of the metaverse is a virtual social space such as an where people can interact with each other. This technology aims to ensure the security of persistent virtual experiences due to the growth of virtual productivity. To make it more interesting, Facebook and Microsoft decided to collaborate online with big brands such as Nike. This American corporation is planning to sell virtual sneakers through the metaverse. Other digital spaces to look forward to in the metaverse are hybrid offices, video-based education, and online social communities.

The word “metaverse” itself is based on Neal Stephenson’s 1992 novel, Snow Crash. Another inspiration for this project is Earnest Cline’s 2011 novel called Ready Player One. Nonetheless, the metaverse is not related to sci-fi. Besides that, there are also online platforms that influenced the invention of the metaverse. Online communities have existed since the mid-1980s and became chat rooms in the 1990s. World of Warcraft became a sensation for millions of people in the early 2000s. Nowadays, people socialize with friends, family, or even strangers through online gaming platforms such as Fortnite and PUBG. Chatting with friends through a console platform and playing with them can be considered as a non-physical social interaction. But the experience is still the same.

Regardless of the device, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), or even a TV screen. The metaverse allows a greater overlap of our digital and physical lives in productivity, socialization, entertainment, etc. The “parallel” metaverse universe and reality will be interwoven, signifying the evolution of the internet.
